Start here: how SEO fits together
A beginner’s guide to SEO, what the terms mean, and what to do first. No marketing experience needed.
SEO stands for search engine optimization. In plain English, it means making your website easier for search engines like Google to understand and more useful to people looking for your business. The goal is to earn relevant visits from unpaid search results, not buy ads.
How the pieces fit together
- An SEO audit finds problems on your own website. You then decide which problems to fix.
- Keywords are the words customers search for. Keyword research helps you choose useful topics and phrases instead of guessing.
- Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Relevant, trustworthy links can help build outside credibility.
- Backlink monitoring helps you notice new or missing links so you know what to check.
- Competitor analysis helps you understand the gap between your website and businesses appearing ahead of you in search results.
Start small: your first steps
- Add your website as a project in Beacon and run an audit. A project is simply the place where Beacon keeps information about one website.
- Review the audit’s most important issues. Pick one you understand, read its explanation, and fix it or ask your website manager for help.
- Open Research and try a phrase a customer might use, such as “bathroom remodel contractor near me.” Look for phrases that match what you actually offer.
- Improve one relevant page so it clearly answers the customer’s question. Write naturally; do not repeat keywords just to fit them in.
- Track a few relevant keywords, then review Competitors and Backlinks as you get comfortable. Compare progress over time rather than judging one day.
You do not need to learn every term today. Start with the audit, make one useful improvement, and return to the definitions below when you need them. Results take time, and no tool can guarantee a Google ranking.
